The Inauguration
Malang, 17 July 2009 – After passing a rigorous selection process, 150 students finally won scholarships to study at SMAN 10 Malang (Sampoerna Academy), a boarding school of international standards for free high school education. The Inauguration held this morning was attended by Mayor of Malang, Drs. Peni Suparto, M.AP; Chief of the East Java Education Office, Drs. Suwanto, M.Si; Chief of Malang Municipality Education Office, Drs. H. Shofwan SH, M.Si; representative from the Bureau of Research and Development Ministry of National Education, Prof.Dr.Ir. Nadjadji Anwar,Msc; Communications Director of PT. HM.Sampoerna Tbk., Niken Rachmad; SF Education Ambassador, Imelda Fransisca; Principal of SMAN 10 Malang, Dra Hj Niken Santjojo; SF directors and management team, teachers and parents.
The scholarship winners were chosen from over 2600 applicants after a series of tests comprising academic potential test, psychological test, interview and focus group discussion. All of these scholars are outstanding students who have financial difficulties to continue schooling. They come from across the East Java province. Each scholar will get a scholarship valuing at USD 15,000 for a 3-year study period. The scholarship covers tuition, living and meals at the academy, books, insurance and uniform. Data from the Ministry of Education in 2007 shows that 85.5% public high schools in the East Java province and the city of Malang has met the standard of national education. The challenge now lies in the ability to create globally competitive graduates who are highly competent, global minded, and who possess strong moral values. The Sampoerna Academy was established to achieve that. A sound blend of international curriculum from Cambridge University (IGCSE) and national curriculum (KTSP), supported by boarding education – these make a holistic education that marks Sampoerna Academy’s leading advantage.SMAN 10 Malang (Sampoerna Academy) is a joint program between Sampoerna Foundation and the governments of East Java province and Malang. This school, led by Dra Hj Niken Asih Santjojo, has been our United Schools Program (SF-USP) program partner since 2006 and has just won the 2009 National Adiwiyata Pratama award.“The City of Malang is very proud to host the Sampoerna Academy program. This program will further help to support our city as a study destination to those wanting a learning environment that is of a good quality, safe and comfortable,” Mayor of Malang City, Drs. Peni Suparto said.“Sampoerna Academy does not only equip students with quality education, but also leadership and life skills, community service awareness and financial literacy training. We are hoping that the vision and mission of this program will create future leaders with national pride and good moral values” said SF COO, Elan Merdy.All of these scholars had undergone the school’s orientation program from July 13 to July 16, 2009, and will commence their first day of school on Tuesday, July 21st, 2009. SMAN 10 Malang (Sampoerna Academy) received full financial support from private companies with a heart for education. PT. HM. Sampoerna Tbk donated grants for infrastructure development including the boarding facility; PT. Merpati Mahkota Sarana, producer of Standard ballpoint and marker pens is assisting SMA Academy Malang and Palembang Olympic furniture will provide study desks and book shelves for these 150 students.This 2009/2010 academic year will also witness the launch of Sampoerna Academy in SMA Negeri Internasional Sumatera Selatan in Palembang, South Sumatera.
